This study was conducted to investigate the behavior of the Blue Nile and its geomorphology and to map soil; land use and to investigate the formation and features of the kerib land along the Blue Nile in the middle reach.
The study area lies in the arid and semi arid climatic zones of Sudan.
Remote sensing and GIS techniques were used accompanied by field work.
Four maps for geomorphology, drainage pattern, soil, and land use were produced by interpretation of land sat images.
Two profiles were dug to study the formation process of calcium carbonate in the dissected levees and the features of the kerib lands.
The results of the land sat images interpretation and field work revealed that kerib lands are associated along banks of the Blue Nile representing a unique phenomenon.
The kerib lands lie between the recent terraces of the Blue Nile river and the clay plains.
The geomorphological and pedological studies revealed that, the CaCO3 of the kerib lands were precipitated locally (in situ).
The dentiritic drainage pattern dissected the levees forming the kerib lands features in the study area and it is caused by rill erosion.
While the kerib land along Atbara river is caused by back gully erosion on the clay plain.
The chemical analysis of the profile of the clay plain revealed the increase of calcium carbonate in the (Ck) horizon due to leaching.
It also showed clearly the accumulation of unsorted and irregular calcium carbonate concretions on the surface and within the profile of kerib land.
