الملخص EN

The continuous reduction in possible outlets for heavy fuel oil forces refiners to process more and more residual feeds in their FCC units.

The use of resid can cause severe penalties in FCC performance.

This paper shows that a new family of resid FCC catalysts presents an immediate solution without any capital investment.

The use of these catalysts allows a substantial increase of the Conradson carbon content of the FCC feed.

The new generation of resid catalysts is also able to tolerate much higher levels of contaminant metals.

The success of these catalysts can be ascribed to some unique properties: • Minimized effects of the Conradson carbon in the feed.

The penalties on FCC performance, associated with Conradson carbon, are reduced by about 50%.

• Extreme nickel passivation.

These catalysts have already been used at nickel levels above 10000 ppm on the equilibrium catalyst.

The use of antimony or bismuth passivation is not required anymore.

• Improved vanadium tolerance.

Higher levels of resid can be processed without an increase in catalyst consumption.

• More effective cracking of large molecules.

Higher resid levels in the feed do not lead to higher slurry yields.

The better performance is illustrated by four examples, that compare the new resid catalysts with conventional technology.

The improvements in FCC economics are substantial and deserve serious consideration by every refinery with an FCC unit.
