A methodology for multipass machining optimization

Optimization of multipass machining operations requires efficient algorithms for obtaining the optimal number of passes and corresponding optimal cutting conditions.

In this paper an algorithm based on systematic search and non-linear programming (NLP) techniques is introduced.

The proposed algorithm is applied to a multipass turning model and the results are compared with those obtained using a dynamic programming (DP) algorithm reported in the literature.

The suggested algorithm shows a superiority over the dynamic programming algorithm and has resulted in savings ranging from 29.8% for machining a layer 2 mm deep to 8.7% for machining a depth of 10 mm
