Geo-environmental appraisal of the alluvial terrain of south-central Gujarat state-India

The prevailing set of geological environments comprise endogenic and exogenic energy dispersal system operating with the alluvial formations of the area.

The parameters include seismicity, floods, erosion, deposition, salinity, inundation storm-cyclones etc.....

The influence of endogenic and exogenic parameters of the cnetral Gujarat area indicates that this area could be divided into four geo-environmental zones as: I- Central Alluvial zone.

II- Eastern Piedmont zone.

Ill- N and S river banks zone.

JV-Western coastal zone.

The first two zones are stable while the later two are vulnerable.

Almost 80% of the area has got stable and amicable geo-environments for comfortable living.

It is reflected into large scale development and at times over development of various activities like agriculture, industry, habitation etc.

Adverse effects of over developments are now experienced in overall degrading trend of the prevailing environments.

The soil-water system in several parts of the area has been affected.

The proposed scale of developmental activities like canal irrigation, intensive urbanisation, growing industrial-lisation, etc, indicate overloading to the bearing capability of the terrain and it will require appropriate corrective measures in relation to the geological set up to conserve the environments.
