Evaluation of road pavements in Karak

The Municipality of Karak administer and maintain about 17 km of paved roads.

The Municipality lacks a rational method for the evaluation of pavements and finding maintenance priorities, as it lacks a qualified and experienced technical staff.

All the informative data about the network dealing with the history of its construction and maintenance is also missing.

The Municipality has no separate annual road budget for maintenance purposes.

In this study a rational, repeatable, accurate and simple method for pavement evaluation was for the first time introduced in Karak.

This method is the Pavement Condition Index (PCI).

The road network in Karak was divided into branches, sections, and sample units, and all existing distresses were identified, measured, quantified and recorded.

The PCI was then calculated for each sample unit and extrapolated for the whole sections.

This paper describes the method used, the field work, analyzes the obtained data, and provides conclusions on the state of the pavements in Karak and recommendations of a rational pavement management system
