الملخص الإنجليزي

The war against microbial infections remains an important concern because of the emerging infectious diseases and presence of drug and multi-drug resistant microbial pathogens.

To solve these serious problems, there is still a need for new antimicrobial agents to control microbial pathogens.

Therefore, this study is concerned in evaluating the antimicrobial activity of newly synthesized triazole derivatives against different Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as yeast.

The new triazole compounds were previously synthesized and characterized by Prof.

Yaseen Al-Soud and Abdullah Al-Balushi from the department of Chemistry at Al al-Bayt University, Al-Mafraq, Jordan and designated as YAB13, YAB7, YASMD27, YASMD20, and YASMD16, YASMD28.

These triazole compounds were tested against three types of bacteria: standard bacterial strains, environmental bacterial strains, and clinical bacterial strains.

Members of the latter group were isolated from clinical samples and identified by biochemical method as well as molecular method, namely, 16S rRNA gene sequencing.

These biochemical and molecular analyses led for the identification of three novel clinical bacterial strains.

The antimicrobial activity of the new triazoles against all types of bacteria was evaluated by agar well diffusion and broth dilution methods. Our results revealed that four compounds (YAB13, YAB7, YASMD20, and YASMD27) were found active against different bacterial species.

Compound YAB13 was active against the clinical bacterial isolate MS2 (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) while the positive control (penicillin G) did not show any activity against this strain.

The compound YAB13 which contains the chromene group was active against two other bacterial strains Shigella sp., and Bacillus cereus ATCC 11778) .The most sensitive strain was MS2 (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) with Inhibition zone of 16 mm.

The compound YAB7 which contains nitrobenzene group was active against Shigella sp.

and Bacillus cereus ATCC 11778 with MIC values 1.75mg/ml and 0.75mg/ml respectively.

The compound YASMD27 which contains furan ring showed high antibacterial activity against the bacterial strain Yersinia enterocolitica (Inhibition zone=18mm).Compound YASMD20 which contains thiophene ring showed antibacterial activity against only one bacterial strain Bacillus pumilus (Inhibition zone=10mm).

The compounds YASMD16 and YASMD28 didn't show any activity against all the tested microorganisms. According to our analysis, four of newly synthesized triazole compounds have moderate to good antibacterial activity while the other two compounds were inactive.

Hence, the chemical structure of triazole compounds plays an important role in their antibacterial activity.

Further studies must be carried out to test the toxicity of these compounds and the feasibility of these compounds to be used in the future as antibacterial agents against clinical isolates as well as against other types of microorganisms such as protozoa.
