الملخص الإنجليزي

Seepage is one of the most serious problems of water loss in the irrigation canals.

The excessive seepage losses can cause low lying areas of land to become unworkable.

In Iraq, most projects of concrete lining irrigation canals which constructed by the Ministry of Water Resources, suffer from seepage losses phenomena through joints.

The loss of water due to seepage from irrigation canals constitutes a substantial part of the usable water.

The aim of this study is to reduce or prevent the seepage by using new alternative joints filling materials.

The methodology in this study follows two main categories for calculating and studying the seepage and efficiency of some alternative materials, hoping to apply a new filling joint material, and assessing their performance to prevent seepage.

The first category is done by constructing a trapezoidal concrete canal model.

The model scale is chosen and made to simulate an actual field watercourse.

The joints filling materials used in this research are; cement-sand mortar, cement-sand mortar with Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR), cement-sand with Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM), and Setseal B (liquid polymer with powder).

Comparative laboratorial studies have been made to decide the degree of performance of these addition materials for future use ofIraqi canal lining.

The seepage rates 0.0365m3/day/1m, 0.0329m3/day/1m, 0.026m3/day/1m, 0.004m3/day/1m, and zero m3/day/1m of the canal length for cement-sand mortar, cement-sand mortar with (SBR), cement-sand with (KIM), Setseal B as joints filling material, and Setseal B as a coating layer material (over the cement-sand joints).

From the results of the laboratory model tests, Setseal B as a coating layer material (over the cement-sand joints) was chosen to apply for the field study.

The average percentage of seepage losses is reduced to about 11.3 % when using cement-sand mortar and SBR, 29 % when using cement-sand mortar and KIM, and 89 % when using Setseal B as joints filling material instead of cement-sand Mortar.

The second category is carried out by field study, which is done on a branch of irrigation concrete canal in Hurriya-Dagh'ara project, which is located in Al-Diwaniyah Province /Afak District.

Setseal B as a coating layer is applied on the existing cement-sand joints of the canal (based on the results of the laboratory model tests).

It is tested for 3 weeks during January and February 2013.

The average reduction percentage in water losses is about 6 2.°% by comparing it with using cement-sand mortar only as joints filling material.

However, the total saved water is about 0.007m3/day per 1 meter of the canal length.

It is found that for the total 18300 km of the canal length, the amount of the estimated saved water equals to about 128100 m3/day.
