Ultra-wideband (UWB) has been rapidly developed as a potential wireless technology and UWB antennas have consequently shown further interest due to its advantages in communication applications.

As clarified by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), UWB technology used to transmit and receive information over a large bandwidth from 3.1-10.6 GHz.

In this work, two new UWB elliptical monopole antennas have been designed and presented.

These antennas were designed with dual band notched characteristics.

The notched frequency bands cover the WiMAX and WLAN frequency range for interference reduction between UWB and these systems.

The proposed antennas have been designed with two types of feeding technologies, the microstrip and the coplanar waveguide (CPW) feeding lines.

These antennas supposed to be printed FR-4 substrate that had a relative dielectric constant of 4.4 and a thickness of 1.6 mm.

The impedance bandwidth characteristics of the designed antennas have been optimized through the optimization of the antenna dimensions.

Further optimization of impedance bandwidth characteristics were carried out through proper modifications in the ground planes and feeder lines.

The proposed antennas use embedded slots to notch the WIMAX and WLAN bands from the UWB impedance bandwidth characteristics.

The designed antennas use slots with different shapes and different positions to achieve the notching characteristics of the desired bands.

In the first antenna design, the notching bands have been achieved by using symmetrical L-shaped and inverted U-shaped slot etched in the patch and feeder line respectively.

For the second antenna design, elliptical shaped and inverted L-shaped slot are etched in the patch and ground plane respectively.

By adjusting the dimensions of the slots, the desired band-notched characteristics can be obtained.

The performance of the antennas parameters such as return loss, voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) characteristics of the notched bands, current distributions, radiation pattern are comprehensively demonstrated and carried out.

The simulation results are obtained and optimized using a commercial electromagnetic simulator Computer Simulation Technology (CST).

The proposed antennas show UWB characteristics with two notched bands and acceptable returned losses, good gain characteristics and omni-directional and quisi omni-directional field pattern characteristics needed in wireless communications.

Compared to other recently proposed antennas, the proposed antennas designed in this work has simple profile, wide bandwidth , compact in size, easy controllable notched band characteristics and good gain and field pattern characteristics over the entire desired bandwidth.
