The growing demand for wireless communication required to increase the capacity, spectral efficiency and decrease the probability of outage of these channels in the presence of different type of fading.

Adaptive modulation technique provides these required.

The aim of the thesis is an analysis, design, simulation and implementation of the adaptive modulation for the fourth WiMAX system.

The adaptive modulation techniques are Variable rate- Variable power, Variable rate-Constant power and Constant rate- Variable power in the presence of Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN), Rayleigh fading and Nakagami fading.

In this work include a proposed wireless AM system based on SDR using FPGA.

The main units of this system are BPSK, QPSK, 8QAM, insert pilot channel and SNR measurement channel.

The backbone of AM is the measurement of the SNR in order to select the required AM technique which are mentioned above.

The real time measurement of SNR by using pilot.

The measurement of SNR required to separate the noise from receiving signals in order to find SNR.

There are two techniques to separate noise from receiving signals either using the detected signal or by using pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) technique.

The Simulink HDL Coder has been used for converting the MATLAB-Simulink models to VHDL language.

The verification of the generated VHDL code has been done using Altera- ModelSim, while the synthesis reports and board programming files have been obtained using the Quartus II.

System implementation has been done using FPGA technology with Altera Cyclone II boards.

The implementation by using Simulink HDL coder shows the feasibility and flexibility in solving the problem of complex multiplication of complex spreading code also the practical results were close to that obtainedfrom ModelSim.

The analysis results show the advantage of using WiMAX system with adaptive MQAM modulation techniques.

Analytical results show that the channel capacity is improved by (38) M bit/sec when increasing the bandwidth from 1MHz to 20MHz in the presence of AWGN.

The capacity channel improves by (35) Mbit/Sec when increasing the bandwidth from 1MHz to 20MHz in the presence of Rayleigh fading with Variable rate-Variable power.

Also in the capacity channel is improved in the presence of Nakagami fading (m=2) is (37) M bit/sec and improved (38) when (m=3) due to severe effect of Nakagami when increasing the 1MHz to 20MHz for a given SNR.

However, the analysis of spectral efficiency shows that maximum spectral efficiency is accrues in Shannon capacity.

The spectral efficiency decrease when Bit Error Rate (BER) increase.

The analysis results show the spectral efficiency decrease (0.5) when we use BER=1 0 “ 3 than when we used BER=1 0 “ 6.

The probability of outage increase when increase the BER..

Experimental results show the loss (+ 1 dB) between the set value and measure value and using pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) technique to measure the SNR and also coincidence between transmitted and received data with time delay of (0.3- 0.4^sec).

However, the combination of MATLAB (Simulink and M-file) and Simulink HDL Coder provides flexible capabilities for analysis, design, simulation, implementation and verification.
