الملخص الإنجليزي

Polymer - based components are exposed to many damage influences during their lifetime.

One of that is erosion which is a crucial problem in many industrial applications such as boats and sewage…etc, due to impingements of solid particles being suspended in the fluids flowing at high velocity.

The impact of solid particles, entrained in a fluid flow, erodes components.

Their surfaces, impacted by these particles, undergo a continuous decrease in thickness, which could impair the component resistance.

Erosive wear can be found on boat body, impellers, nozzles…etc.

It is of great interest to study erosion wear and its effects on the mechanical properties of polymer matrix composites.

This work presents a study of the physical and mechanical properties and erosion wear of traditional and hybrid polyester matrix composites.

Traditional and hybrid composites were prepared by Hand lay-up molding and investigated.

The composites constituents were unsaturated polyester resin as the matrix, 3% and 6% volume fractions of carbon fibers as reinforcement and 3% of Al2O3, Al, Cement and local Gypsum as filler particles.

The investigated physical properties were density, porosity, water absorption and thermal conductivity, while the mechanical properties were hardness, tensile properties, bending modulus of elasticity, shear stress and impact properties (impact strength, fracture toughness).

Solid particles erosion wear tests are also carried out.

The experimental results showed that increased volume fraction of carbon fibers to (6%) led to increase in physical properties (density, porosity, water absorption and thermal conductivity).

As for the physical properties, the results showed that Al2O3-contained hybrid composites gave the higher density of (1.285) gm ∕cm3, gypsum-contained traditional composites gave the lower porosity of (1.761), Al2O3-contained traditional composites gave the lower water absorption of (0.362 ), and Aluminum-contained hybrid composites gave the higher thermal conductivity of (0.5 ) W/m.c⁰.

As for the mechanical properties, (6% carbon fibers/gypsum)-contained hybrid composites gave the higher shore hardness of (85), carbon fiber composites and (3% carbon fibers/Al2O3)-contained hybrid composites gave the higher tensile and fracture strength of ( 63.250, 54.080,59.176,) Mpa , carbon fiber then gypsum composites gave the higher bending modulus of (9424.6) Mpa, carbon fiber composites and (6% carbon fibers/Al)-contained hybrid composites gave the higher shear and flexural strength of (1440, 1056, 45,33) Mpa, carbon fiber composites and (6% carbon fibers/Al)-contained hybrid composites gave the higher impact strength of (3562.5, 2375 ) J/m2 and carbon fiber composites and (3% carbon fibers/Al2O3)-contained hybrid composites gave the higher fracture toughness of (94.070, 44.738 ) Mpa.m-1/2.

The particle-contained water jet type experimental erosion test results backed by optical and scanning electron microscope examination revealed that the reinforcement volume fraction as well as particles distribution and bonding has considerable effect on the wear of polyester composites.

It showed that the better resistance was for alumina particles hybrid composites at distance 115mm, angle 90°, erodent size 600 μm, and time 10 hour.

The findings of Taguchi orthogonal arrays indicated that the most influential level value depends on the material used and the most contribution factor was the volume fraction.
