الملخص الإنجليزي

Cathodic protection is an effective electrochemical technique for preventing corrosion of metallic structures, for large structures like piles network impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system is usually preferred.

ICCP system uses anode which is connected to a direct current power source (AC powered rectifier).

The main aim of this study is to obtain the optimum protection potential that would provide a full cathodic protection for steel piles network immersed in sea water at Al-Zubair harbor.

In order to determine the optimum protection potential, three pipes of carbon steel as cathodes and a rod of graphite as anode in a solution which contains 3% NaCl were used in weight loss, potentiostat and polarization tests.

The effect of one immeasurable factor (path of anode (χ1)) and two measurable factors (position of anode (χ2) and voltage of power supply (χ3)) on protection potential are studied.

Each factor has three different levels (high, medium, and low).

The normal probability and ANOVA methods are used to find the significance of these factors and their interaction.

The experimental work is made dependent on design of experiment (DOE) , twenty-seven experiments were conducted based on full factorial design of experiments.

Response Surface Methodology (RSM), Signal to Noise (S/N) Ratio and Mean Based Levels techniques are applied to find the optimal conditions among the levels of the significant factors.

Utilizing the full factorial design , systematic analysis, and optimization methods important results are gathered. The results show that ,a sufficient protection for three cathodes can be provided through the electrical circuit connecting them within the appropriate geometric shape.

The protection potential is increased with increasing the voltage of power supply and decreasing of distance between the anode and cathodes (piles network).

Based on ANOVA results, the following factors have most significant effect in descending order: (χ3), (χ1), (χ1χ2), and (χ1χ3).On the other hand, (χ2), and (χ2χ3) have no significant influence on protection potential.

That were the same for current density except (χ1χ2) has no significant influence.

Optimal combination of factors levels based on (S/N) ratio and Mean based levels which give us the maximum protection potential are : path of anode =2, position of anode = 1.8 cm ,voltage of power supply =2.5 V, the obtained protection potential result from these optimum levels is (-1096) mV.The virtual experiments were made to verify the value of protection potential in the inner area bounded by the piles network which is not scanned by the anode to make sure that if there is any position in this area it can increase the protection, the results of virtual experiments show that the selected positions in this study have covered the highest values of protection potential.
