The wireless communication applications continue to require wide and more bandwidth, there has been continued to increase in demand ultra wide bandwidth antennas.

Planar monopole antennas are generally suitable for mobile applications.

Therefore, a new method is proposed to improve the bandwidth of this antenna structure.

The First part of this thesis describes the design compact ultra wide bandwidth antenna with 3.5GHz single band-notched characteristic.

It can be achieved by etching a C-shaped slot in the patch to avoid the interference between UWB and WiMAX.

The basis for achieving the UWB operation can be achieved using circular microstrip monopole antenna with modified ground plane as a semicircular ground.

This shape produces a bandwidth range (3.15-18) GHz with a reduction around 25% from the conventional rectangular ground plane.

The Second part of this thesis concentrates on proving the existence of the negative phase of transmission coefficient within certain frequency region.

And, the relationship between different varies dimensions used affect the frequency response (reflection and transmission coefficient) is emphasized In order to understand further the metamaterial structure and its properties.

Also, it looks into the effect of metamaterial structure to the ultra wideband antenna by using artificial magnetic structure such as Split Ring Resonator (SRR) that satisfies enhancement in bandwidth in the range (1.5-18) GHz.

It is suggested that an antenna with bandwidth in excess of frequency range (2 – 8) GHz to be used, to include the wireless communication such as (4G) mobile communication.

Finite element method has been carried out to evaluate the performance of the modeled antenna with metamaterial using the Ansoft HFSS.
