The objective of this research is to design and build a laser scanning system that can be used for many purposes like 3D graphics, remote sensing and robotic applications depending on optical triangulation technique.

Advantage and disadvantage of this system have been study, experimental limitation (Adverse Illumination, Occlusion and Reflection) and the techniques to reduce their effect has also been considered .Study the effect of laser incident angle on resolution and maximum distance can be measured by system.Study the effect of detector tilt angle on resolution and maximum distance can be measured by system.

Study of using brightness reducer filter to reduce effect of surrounded high light source on effect of laser spot detection.Study effect of stepper motor no.

step/revulsion on 3d scanning resolution .Study of optimum image processing algorithm to laser spot detection which enhanced of laser spot detection time which reduce the total time needed to complete 3D scanning.The system under investigation consists of four parts laser system, electronic system, mechanical system and software application build by using Csharp programming language.

Laser system, includes green laser source with a wavelength 532nm and power <5mW, and Logitech C170 CMOS camera with resolution of 640X480 to detect reflected laser and green filter to minimize influence of other light effect.Electronic system is implemented by design electronic interface card for control mechanical and control of laser biasing part by using computer parallel port.

Mechanical system consist of two stepper motors with gear box (1:2ratio) to implement of azimuth and elevation scanning.Software system used CSHARP(c#) programming language to implement 3 tasks control mechanical system, laser detection and filtering and graph of 3D model.

Using image processing depend on canny edge detection and blob filtering algorithms for laser spot detection.

Triangulation method is powerful with range less than 5m,enhanced the design to reducing the limitation ,compare the distance measured by system with real distance and calculate the error rate for distance.two experimental test has been done, one with cubic box with many sides with multi shapes and evaluate the scanning result.

The other one was for dummy face which has complex details.
