الملخص الإنجليزي

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of the synthetic and analytic phonics strategies on lower basic stage students' reading and writing in the UAE.

The study attempted to answer the following questions: 1-What is the effect of the used teaching strategy (synthetic phonics strategy, analytic phonics strategy or conventional strategy) on lower basic stage students' reading achievement? 2- What is the effect of the used teaching strategy (synthetic phonics strategy, analytic phonics strategy or conventional strategy) on lower basic stage students' writing achievement? To achieve these goals, the researcher chose a sample of three classes of grade two from Al Sadara Model School, Cycle One - Al Ain Education Zone randomly from the available eight sections in the school.

The first group was taught using the analytic phonics strategy, the second group was taught using the synthetic phonics strategy and the third group was taught using the conventional strategy.

The researcher developed two teaching strategies an analytic phonics strategy and a synthetic phonics strategy.

He also modified two reading and writing tests (Burt Reading Test and Schonell Spelling Test).

The two strategies and the two tests were given to a jury of experts of curriculum consultants, early years advisors and teachers from Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC).The notes, remarks and recommendations of the jury were taken into account.

Before starting the study, the three groups were pre-tested in reading and spelling and the One Way ANOVA results showed that the three groups were equivalent in reading and writing before starting teaching.

The reliability of the instruments and the teaching strategies were conducted by using test-retest method.

At the end of the teaching stage, the three groups were post-tested .Students’ scores (who were taught in the three different strategies) were listed to measure the effect of the analytic and synthetic phonics strategies on students' reading and writing.

Means, standard deviations, percentages, One Way ANOVA were used to analyze the findings of the study.

The findings of the study were as follows: 1- There were statistically significant differences at (a= 0.05) among the mean scores of students’ who were taught in the three different strategies (synthetic phonics strategy, analytic phonics strategy and the conventional strategy) on the reading test in favour of the synthetic phonics strategy.

2- There were statistically significant differences at (a= 0.05) among the mean scores of the students’ who were taught in the three different strategies (synthetic phonics strategy, analytic phonics strategy and the conventional strategy) on spelling test in favour of the synthetic phonics strategy.

In light of the findings of the study, it was recommended that the Ministry of Education should start using synthetic phonics strategy to teach early grades.

It was also recommended that training courses to early grades' teachers should be organized to teach this strategy effectively.

The researcher recommended that further studies should be conducted on the same topic by involving other variables such as sex, socio - economic status and attitudes of teachers and parents towards this strategy.
