الملخص الإنجليزي

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a reciprocal teaching strategy on enhancing reading comprehension.

Specifically, the study attempted to answer the following questions: 1.

What is the effect of a reciprocal teaching strategy on the Jordanian first secondary class students’ reading comprehension in English? 2.

Are there any differences between the mean scores of the achievement test in reading comprehension due to gender? 3.

Are there any differences in the achievement of students that is attributed to the interaction between gender and the teaching method? 4.

What is the effectiveness of the reciprocal strategy from the students’ perspectives? The participants of the study consisted of 84 female and male first secondary grade students during the year 2005/2006.

The schools were purposefully selected on convenient grounds.

The experimental group was taught by the reciprocal strategy, and the control group was taught by the conventional method of teaching.

The study involved two validated measures: a reading comprehension test, and a student’s opinion questionnaire on using a reciprocal strategy.

One way ANOVA was used to detect the significant difference between the mean scores of the four groups at (α =0.05) level of significance.

The results of the study showed that there were statistically significant differences at (α= 0.05) between the mean scores of the post achievement test of the experimental group who studied reading via a reciprocal strategy and the control group who studied the same texts using the conventional method in favor of the experimental group.

The study concluded that more research is recommended to provide additional knowledge with regard to the replication of the experiment at other different levels of learners at schools.

It is also recommended that extensive courses and workshops for teachers on the new reciprocal teaching strategy be encouraged if the method requirements are to be met in the educational sector of Jordan.
