الملخص الإنجليزي

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of teaching vocabulary and reading comprehension in line with the Word–Detective strategy and the Suggestopedia method.

The researcher designed a manual for the teacher to use. The subjects of the study consisted of sixth grade female students; three sections were randomly selected.

Two sections were assigned as experimental groups one for Suggestopedia and another for Word-Detective while the third section was assigned as a control group; therefore, a quasi – experimental mode of inquiry was adopted in this study since the sample was chosen intentionally, but its assignment was carried out randomly.

This study sought to answer the following questions: 1.

Are there any significant differences in vocabulary achievement among the basic middle stage students of the three groups due to the Word- Detective, Suggestopedia and the Conventional method of teaching? 2.

Are there any significant differences in reading comprehension achievement among the basic middle stage students of the three groups due to the Word- Detective, Suggestopedia and the Conventional method of teaching? To answer the questions of the study, the researcher conducted one-way ANOVA on students’ mid-term final results in English in the sixth grade. The first experimental group was taught vocabulary and reading comprehension according to the Word-Detective strategy and the second experimental group was taught according to the Suggestopedia strategy, while the control group was taught via the conventional method.

The implementation of the program lasted for four months.

At the end of the experiment, the three groups sat for a vocabulary and reading comprehension test.

One-way ANOVA means and frequencies were used to analyze the data of the study. The findings of the study revealed statistically significant differences in teaching vocabulary in favor of the experimental groups and it also revealed significant differences in teaching reading comprehension in favor of the Suggestopedia method, while no statistically significant differences in teaching reading comprehension were found between the Word-Detective group and the conventional method.

Moreover, the findings also revealed that the Suggestopedia method was better than both the Word-Detective Strategy and the conventional method; whereas, the Word-Detective Strategy was shown to be better than the conventional method.

In the light of these findings, the researcher came up with several conclusions, made some implications and recommendations.
