الملخص الإنجليزي

This study aimed at investigating the relationship between Jordanian secondary stage students' attitudes toward learning English as a foreign language and their achievement in reading comprehension.

The study aimed to answer these questions: 1- What are the Jordanian first secondary class students' attitudes towards learning English as a foreign language? 2- Is there any significant difference in the Jordanian first secondary class students’ attitudes towards learning English as a foreign language due to their gender? 3- Is there a significant relationship between the first secondary class students' achievement in reading comprehension and their attitudes towards English as a foreign language? The population of the study consisted of all the first secondary class students in public schools in Ajlun Directorate of Education in the academic year 2005-2006.

They were 2443 students distributed over 123 first secondary class sections and 41 schools.

The researcher used the clusteral sampling method in choosing the schools and sections in which he conducted his study.

The sample consisted of 204 students distributed over 20 classes. The following instruments were used for answering the questions and testing the hypotheses: 1.

A reading comprehension multiple choice test. 2.

A questionnaire of 50 items constructed by the researcher Means, standard deviations and correlation coefficients were used to analyze the data.

The findings of the study revealed that many students had positive attitudes toward learning English as a foreign language.

Gender did not play a part in the strategies that students used in their learning. The result of the fifth question revealed that there was a relationship between students' attitudes toward learning English as a foreign language and their achievement in reading comprehension.
