الملخص الإنجليزي

This study aimed to develop a computerized ESP program for secondary school students’ hotel stream that caters for their needs in the second semester 2003/2004 in Jordan, and subsequently to assess its effect on students’ proficiency in English.

More specifically, it attempted to address the following questions: 1-What are the English language needs of the hotel stream students in Jordan? 2-What is the effect of the resulting computerized ESP program stream on the students’ English proficiency? The sample for the study consisted of two groups; the first is for needs assessment, consisting of one hundred and forty six male students, twenty seven teachers teaching/ hotel stream and twenty four employees from local hotels , randomly selected.

The second group is the study group, consisting of fifty students from the first secondary class / hotel stream; 26 of whom comprised the experimental group and studied via the computerized ESP program, while the 24 students comprised the control group and studied via a non-computerized ESP program. To answer the questions of the study, two instruments were used for evaluation, a questionnaire addressed to students, teachers, and employees, and a students’ English proficiency test, both of them were designed by the researcher.

The questionnaire consisted of 47 items including language skills, sub-skills, and language use.

The questionnaire was divided into the following sections: (1) questions 1-25 were to obtain data on listening and speaking skills and sub-skills; (2) questions 26-34 were to obtain data on the reading skills and sub-skills most needed to ensure success in hotel jobs; (3) questions 35-47 were to obtain data on the writing skills and sub-skills most needed to ensure success in hotel jobs; and (4) open questions were included to obtain data on students’ views regarding the priority of language skills and language use and about improving the English language abilities of hotel-stream students in Jordan . The researcher developed a students’ English proficiency test.

The purpose of the test was to examine the students’ proficiency in English in the hotel field.

This test consisted of forty questions, graded into (100) and these items were divided into the following sections: reading passage, speaking test, six multiple-choice items testing students’ knowledge of vocabulary, grammar , listening passage and writing test. The procedures were followed in conducting the study during the second semester of the 2003/2004 academic year.

The needs were identified, the objectives of the program were derived from the identified needs, the test was administered as a pre-test and a post-test for the purpose of this study.

Materials were selected, the ESP program was designed, developed , judged and administered through holding a meeting with the participating teachers to clarify the purpose of the program and assigning the teachers to the two groups and organizing meetings in which the participating teachers were trained to implement the proposed computerized program. Computing the results of the pre-test and post-test and statistical data was processed to assess the research hypothesis. The findings of the study revealed that the computerized ESP hotel stream program has a measurable effect on the English proficiency of the experimental group.

This program, deliberately built upon students’ needs and interests, motivates and encourages students to learn and build their self-confidence and positive attitudes toward the learning process.

To conclude, this high level of the proposed program apparently led to an effective process of teaching and learning resulting in significant improvement. Based on the findings of the study, it is recommended that curriculum designers and experts make use of the resulting hotel computerized ESP program to produce similar programs for other streams and students in deferent secondary streams should be taught English courses making use of CALL.
