الملخص الإنجليزي

The primary aims of this quantitative study were first to design an on-line program to teach writing to university students, and second to explore its effectiveness. The study tried to answer the following questions: 1- Does using an on-line program to teach writing to university students improve their writing skill compared to the traditional method of teaching? 2- Is there a significant difference in the students' achievement in writing that can be attributed to gender? 3- Is there a significant difference in the students' achievement in writing that can be attributed to the students' prior knowledge in computer and e-mail? 4- Is there any effect on the students' achievement in writing due to the interaction among method, gender, and prior knowledge in computer? 5- What are the characteristics of an on-line program used to teach EFL writing to Jordanian university students? The population of the study included all the students (207) in the English Language Department at Al-al-Bayt University (AABU) who were enrolled in Writing 2 in the first semester 2003/2004.

The purposeful sample of the study consisted of 125 students.

They were divided into two sections: one section, the experimental, was taught writing via a special program using e-mail; the other section was taught in a traditional classroom setting.

The instrument of the study was computer-based.

It was an on-line program to teach advanced writing (Writing 2) to university level students.

A web page was designed with useful links and learning material were included; and an e-mail address for course/instructor was determined.

Two evaluation forms in a questionnaire format were developed.

Questionnaire 1 was used to determine students' knowledge in computer and e-mail.

While, Questionnaire 2 was used by the students to evaluate the program.

Means , ANOVA, and frequency distribution statistical analyses were used to analyze data from pre-test, post-test scores to answer the questions of the study.

Findings from questionnaire 2, were used to consolidate answers to the study questions. The study findings revealed the following: 1.

There were statistically significant differences (α = 0.05) in the students' achievement test scores in favor of the experimental group.

2.

There was no significant difference in the students' achievement in writing due to gender.

3.

There were significant differences (α = 0.05) in the students' achievement in writing due to students' prior knowledge in computer and using e-mail.

4.

There were no significant differences (α = 0.05) in the students' achievement in writing due to the interaction among method, gender, and prior knowledge in computer. 5.

An on-line program used to teach writing to university students should have a web page with a URL address easy to access and an e-mail address for the course/instructor.

The web page is the means to deliver the course.

It should contain a main menu to connect the learner with other sections of the program: the learning material/resources, language learning websites, information about the course (objectives, procedures, requirements, and method of assessment), and FAQ section (to answer questions student might ask about the program.

The e-mail address for the course/instructor enables students to ask for help, send assignments, get announcements and feedback; and supplies the instructor with a tool to give feedback, answer questions and send announcements and assignments..

In the light of the above findings, it is recommended that such programs/courses (on-line learning) be incorporated in the teaching of writing and other language skills.

It is also advised that present syllabi are revised and updated.

In addition, teachers need to be introduced to and familiarized with such courses.
