To fulfill a graduation requirement, all students in the faculty of computer studies are requested to pass the final year project course.

Learning about how projects develop and being able to explain why the project has developed in the way it has are key skills that are central to this course and its learning outcomes.

The emphasis in the Senior Project Course is on becoming a reflective practitioner.

That is, someone who is technically proficient but who is also able to step back from the details to think about how their project is progressing, what they have learned, and how their knowledge and skills might be further improved.

This course is a chance for the student to demonstrate his/her individual abilities by putting into practice the theory that has been learned by applying and extending the knowledge gained in relevant third level courses, emphasising process rather than product, emphasising reflection and communication skills rather than technical skills and emphasising the importance of evidence based practice with keeping logs throughout process.

However, there are a number of obstacles that might prevent from achieving the intended learning outcomes for the course.

This paper will highlight the main challenges encountered in achieving the learning intended outcomes of the project in the Open Learning Environment.

Then, it will propose a set of recommendations that will assist the students to achieve the main objectives of the project.

Finally, the paper will conclude by revealing the importance of the project in encouraging and creating a research platform through which the project will be considered as basic milestones that we can build upon and give a chance to extend the excellent project topics to be research subject areas for the faculties as well as to introduce the academic research culture to the community through involving the students and the industry in this process.
