الملخص الإنجليزي

This study aimed at investigating the effect of a proposed instructional program based on the communicative approach on developing the speaking skill and attitudes towards Speaking English of the basic stage students in Jordan.

This study attempted to answer the following questions: 1- What is the possessing degree of the speaking skill of the eighth grade students in Jordan? 2- What are the components of a proposed instructional program based on the communicative approach in English? 3- What is the effect of a proposed instructional program based on the communicative approach on developing the speaking skill of the eighth grade students in Jordan? 4- What is the effect of a proposed instructional program based on the Communicative Approach on the attitudes of the eighth grade students in Jordan? To answer the questions of the study, the researcher proposed a program based on the communicative approach.

The sample of the study consisted of sixty-four female students divided into two groups, these groups were selected randomly.

One group was assigned to the experimental group, while the other group was assigned to the control group. The researcher used quasi experimental design, and to achieve the study objectives, the researcher developed two instruments namely an achievement test through using the rubric to assess the students speaking skill, and a questionnaire to explore the students attitudes towards speaking English.

The validity and reliability of the instruments were verified.

For analyzing, the researcher used the mean scores, the standard deviations, and Multiple Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) tests.

The findings of the study indicated significant differences in favor of the experimental group, which was taught according to the proposed training program.

On the basis of the results, the study proposed a number of recommendations to those who are involved in the EFL teaching and assessment process.
