الملخص الإنجليزي

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of the native English language teachers in comparison with non native English language teachers on students’ achievement in speaking and writing skills; and their attitudes toward the English language.

The subjects of the study were 6 Native English Teachers (NESTs) and 6 Non native English Teachers (NNESTs), and their 196 10th grade students at the Institute of Applied Technology (IAT).

The participating students were divided into two groups according to their teachers’ linguistic background.

The study sought to answer the questions below: 1.

What is the effect of native English speaking teachers in comparison with non-native English-speaking teachers on students’ achievement in the speaking skill? 2.

What is the effect of native English speaking teachers in comparison with non-native English-speaking teachers on students’ achievement in the writing skill? 3.

What is the effect of native English speaking teachers in comparison with non-native English-speaking teachers on students’ attitudes towards English in UAE? To answer these questions, the researcher developed a speaking test, a writing test, and an attitudinal questionnaire to measure the students’ achievement and performance in both groups.

In addition, two scoring rubrics to assess the students’ speaking performance and students’ writing were also developed to assess achievement in both skills objectively and analytically.

All instruments were finalized based on the jury’s suggestions and the latest studies in the field of EFL/ ESL.

The findings revealed that: 1- There was no statistically significant difference among students’ speaking achievement test scores amongst 10th grade students in UAE at (ά = 0.05) due to the nativity of the teacher. 2- There was no statistically significant difference among students’ writing achievement test scores amongst 10th grade students in UAE at (ά = 0.05) due to the nativity of the teacher. 3- There was no statistically significant difference between students’ attitudes of the group that was taught by NESTs and the attitudes of the group that was taught by NNESTs due to the nativity of the teacher In light of the findings of the study, it was concluded that native English teachers were not better than their non native English counterparts.

It was also emphasized that EFL teachers regardless whether they are native or non native English teachers, should have an excellent command of the English language and a good pedagogical content knowledge to perform better in the language classroom.
