الملخص الإنجليزي

This is a quasi experimental study.

It aimed at investigating the effect of using authentic and non-authentic English language materials on EFL Students' achievement on reading, writing and their attitudes towards learning English.

More specifically, it attempted to answer the following questions: 1.

Is there any significant difference in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) EFL students’ reading achievement scores over time due to the kind of materials (authentic and non-authentic)? 2.

Is there any significant difference in the UAE EFL students’ writing achievement scores over time due to the kind of materials (authentic and non-authentic)? 3.

Is there any significant difference in the UAE EFL students’ attitudes over time due to the kind of materials (authentic and non-authentic)? The sample of the study consisted of two sections of high school graduates/science stream who studied their one-year foundation program at Etisalat Academy in Dubai, UAE during the academic year 2006 – 2007.

One of the two sections was randomly assigned as the control group (30 students) and the second section was assigned as the experimental group (30 students).

Then a pre-test of reading, writing and the questionnaire of attitudes were applied to examine the two groups' equivalence in reading, writing and the attitudes before starting the study.

After treatment a post-test of reading, writing and a questionnaire of attitudes were applied on the two groups. The results of the study revealed that the mean scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than the mean scores of the control group in the reading and writing achievement test after three months of treatment.

This means that the use of the authentic materials had a significantly greater positive effect on the high school EFL students' reading and writing achievement scores than the effect of the use of the non-authentic materials after treatment.

On the other hand, the results showed that there was no statistically significant difference after treatment between the attitudes of the control and the attitudes of the experimental group due to the use of authentic materials.

Based on the results of the study, more studies are recommended to be carried out in different situations for a more thorough investigation.
