Milk yield and lambs growth performances were studied in the Rembi sheep in Tiaret district.
Thirty-six ewes, aged between 3 and 5 years, and suckled single lambs, 18 males and 18 females, were studied throughout the suckling period.
Weigh-suckle-weigh method (WSW) was used to estimate milk production, every 14 days to weaning (16th week).
Lambs were weighed at lambing, and every week to weaning.
Daily and total milk yield were 502 ± 356 g and 55.3 kg, respectively.
Lamb growth performances, for males and females, at birth and weaning age were 4.29 ± 0.44 ; 4.11 ± 0.53 kg and 18.8 ± 3.05 ; 18.2 ± 2.37 kg, respectively.
So, correlation between suckled milk and lamb growth, the first month, was high (0.86) and similar.
The present study showed low milk production for this local sheep breed, with close and acceptable male and female lamb weights at weaning.
On the other hand, large inter-individual variations in milk production were observed in this study.
Thus, the ewe’s production potential could be improved by selection.
الملخص FRE
Le niveau de la production laitière et les performances en croissance des agneaux ont été étudiés chez le mouton Rembi dans la région de Tiaret.
Un effectif de 36 brebis, âgées entre 3 et 5 ans, et allaitant des agneaux simples, 18 mâles et 18 femelles, ont été suivis durant une période de 4 mois.
Le niveau de la production laitière est estimé par la méthode de pesée avant et après tétée (PAAT), tous les 14 jours après agnelage, et les agneaux étaient pesés chaque semaine de la naissance à la 16e.
La moyenne de la production laitière journalière et la production totale étaient, respectivement, de 502 ± 356 g et 55,3 kg.
Les performances pondérales des agneaux, mâles et femelles, étaient respectivement de 4,29 ± 0,44 kg ; 4,11 ± 0,53 kg à la naissance et 18,8 ± 3,05 kg ; 18,2 ± 2,37 kg au sevrage.
Ainsi, la corrélation entre lait tété et croissance d’agneaux au premier mois, était élevée et similaire (r = 0,86) pour les deux sexes.
La présente étude montre que les brebis de cette race locale ne présentent pas un bon potentiel laitier ; toutefois, croissance et poids au sevrage, dans les deux sexes, sont proches et acceptables.
Par ailleurs, l’étude révèle l’existence de larges variabilités interindividuelles particulièrement dans la production laitière ; favorable à la mise en place d’un programme de sélection en vu d’améliorer la production de ce mouton.
