الملخص الإنجليزي

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of self-assessment on upper basic stage EFL students’ writing performance in Jordan.

The subjects of the study consisted of sixty female seventh-grade students enrolled in Escan AL-Dakhlia Basic School at Amman Third Directorate of Education during the first semester of the academic year 2008-2009.

These students were divided into two groups, each consisting of thirty.

The experimental group used the process checklist for assessing their own compositions.

The traditional method was used for assessing each composition for the control group.

Both groups were pre-tested and post-tested using the same test.

The students’ compositions were scored by three raters according to the scoring rubrics for writing.

The average of the three raters’ marks was taken for each student.

The findings showed that implementing self-assessment was more effective in improving only the quantity of students’ writing.

The study, therefore, recommended that teachers of English should consider the use of self-assessment in their writing classes.
