Rotator cuff tendinitis : treatment with an emulsion gel containing diclofenac sodium applied with phonophoresis

Treatment with diclofenac sodium (Voltaren) emulgel was studied in 50 patients with rotator cuff tendinitis, using a controlled study design.

The patients received complex form of physical treatment modalities; including hot packs applications, exercises plus phonophoresis with Voltaren gel in one group, and plain ultrasound therapy in another group of patients.

The treatment modalities used for phonophoresis are based on previous reports of the transmission characteristics of topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory products.

Significant improvement was found in pain reduction and range of shoulder movements after twelve sessions of physical therapy, suggesting better therapeutic results from phonophoresis with Voltaren emulgel compared to ultrasound therapy alone.
