The bioactivity of plant essential oils and antibiotics against Nocardia isolates from respiratory infections

Sixteen essential oils and eleven antibiotics were tested for the antibacterial activity against five Nocardia isolates from respiratory infections patients by agar well diffusion method and disc diffusion method respectively.

The MIC of the active essential oils was limited using agar dilution method.

The results showed that all isolates were sensitive to clove, cinnamon and taramira oils.

Black seed oil was active against some tested isolates but mastic oil was active against one tested isolate.

Garlic, thyme, ginger, hermal, mint, rosemary, lavender, sage, aloe, canfor and linseeds oils showed no activity against any tested isolates.

All five essential oils in this study exhibied bacteriostatic effect against Nocardia isolates.

All the isolates were susceptible (100 %) to levofloxacin, norfloxacin, minocyclin, tetracyclin, impineme and trimethoprim / sulphamethoxazole.
