الملخص الإنجليزي

-In x-ray image usually taken for teeth there are a number of existing problems, that the current technology suffers from, such problems include but not limited to similarity in structure of gum and bone to the teeth themselves.

Therefore the purpose of this study is to enhance the image contrast to discriminate teeth from bones, through a process of a segmented x-rayed tooth images by region of interest approach.

In this thesis using Region of Interest (ROI) approach to segment X-ray tooth image, then enhancing the image contrast by adjacment approach to separate teeth from bones, using Freeman Chain Code (FCC) techniques to represent the boundaries or contours of teeth shape and give it a number, then detecting tooth decay and tooth type such as incisor or molar, by matching between teeth on database and the teeth on original image.

The proposed approach was tested on 81 teeth and the results were satisfactory.

Other researches found the boundary based on intensity of tooth and bones without enhancement, so they had error in contour extraction because dental radiographs contained three distinctive regions: background, teeth, and bones.

Usually the teeth regions have the highest intensity, the bone regions have high intensity that sometimes is close to that of the teeth, and the background has a distinctively low intensity.

Therefore, it assumed that it was easy to separate the background, but it was hard to discriminate teeth from bones.
