الملخص الإنجليزي

Movement of construction and reconstruction has been steadily rising across the Gaza Strip, accompanied by demolition of aging buildings and infrastructure, as a result of the rising population and limited lands.

Over the last few years, demolition projects have increased throughout the Gaza Strip especially after the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip in 2008 -2009, which left a lot of demolished buildings.

Due to the high risks associated with demolition; this issue has become a matter of concern, and a real challenge for environmentalists and urban developers.

The study aims at enhancing ways of assessing risks of demolition works in Gaza strip through identifying demolition characteristics and techniques as well as its hazards, in addition to recognizing ways of managing waste that result from demolition.

This research has been conducted through literature review of the related topics of risk in demolition works.

A field questionnaire survey was used for collecting data.

The questionnaire targeted demolition contractors and engineers.

The questionnaire included ninety two factors, categorized into five groups.

One hundred and forty questionnaires were distributed, while one hundred and seventeen questionnaires were received.

The study showed that, the demolition works in Gaza Strip were mainly an intermediate demolition works (250ton to 500ton), and the most demolition techniques used are demolition by Hand and demolition by Machines with hydraulic attachments.

And the main reasons caused demolition accidents and injuries at site related directly to the workers, unsafe attitudes, not wearing proper protective gear, and lake of experience.

The study also reveals that demolition operations could have an impact on surrounding environment such noise, vibration, dust, and demolition waste which is usually disposed either by recycling or burying it landfills.

Besides, it presents the Deconstruction Technique as an alternative to reduce quantities of demolition waste generated.

In addition, it highlights show separation techniques can be used to process construction materials within demolition sites.

The results of this study recommended the need to develop more flexible, cost effective and environmentally friendly demolition techniques, increase the awareness to the health and safety considerations in demolition sites, promote sustainability development by recycling and reusing demolition debris, utilize selective building deconstruction, and impose laws and environmental regulations that support recycling waste demolishing
