Fungal infection in rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic systemic inflammatory disorder that expresses an immuno-deficiency state.

Fungal arthritis is becoming increasingly important.

This work was conducted to detect the presence of fungal infection amongst 20 rheumatoid arthritis patients and 10 normal controls in nasal swabs and bronchioalveolar lavage.

No positive cultures for fungal infection could be detected in patients or controls.

Further studies on different rheumatic diseases and in synovial tissue is recommended.
