Possible role of glutathione peroxidase in the pathogenesis of knee osteoarthritis

This study was performed on twenty patients complaining of bilateral knee osteoarthritis (OA) and fifteen age and sex matched controls.

We determined the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) in both groups.

We found that there was a statistically significant increase in the activity of GSH-PX in patients as compared with controls.

We also observed that the activity of this enzyme increases with age.

Females showed lower activity than males.

There was a positive correlation between GSH-PX activity and both pain severity and disease duration.

Also there was a significant rise in GSH-PX activity with the severity of plain X-ray grading.

We concluded that GSH-PX might play an important role in the pathogenesis of OA.
