Neurological sequelae of guilain-barre syndrome in Jordanian children

This is a retrospective study to estimate the death rate and neurological sequelae of Guillain - Barre Syndrome (GBS) in Jordanian children.

The clinical profiles and laboratory in¬vestigations of IS patients with proved GBS were reviewed.

The male to female ratio was 1:0.8; all the patients presented with a symmetrical ascending paralysis; 10 patients (55%) had sensory manifestations; eight patients (44%) developed cra¬nial nerve palsies and four patients (22%) had dysautonomia.

Cerebrospinal fluid protein during the first week of illness was high in 13 patients (72%) and normal in five patients (28%).

The neurophysiological studies showed demyelinating polyneuropathy in all patients with different grades of sever¬ity.

Three patients (16%) developed permanent motor neuro¬logical deficits and one died.

The mortality and morbidity of GBS in Jordanian chil¬dren are similar to those reported elsewhere.
