Risk factors in postmenopausal osteoporotic females

Osteoporosis is one of the most common disorders encountered in the elderly.

In our study we tried to investigate some of the risk factors which may have a role in the pathogenesis of postmenopausal osteoporosis; calcium intake in diet, body habits, daUy physical activity and lastly the level of sex hormones (estradiol, progesterone and testosterone).

Our study included 60 postmenopausal osteoporotic females and 15 controls selected from the outpatient clinic of Rheumatology and Rehabilitation.

We investigated the previous factors in cases and controls and each of these factors with the bone mineral density (BMD).

The sex hormones were assessed by racUo-immunoassay according to the Diagnostic product corporation, the body mass index was measured and the calcium intake and daily physical activity were assessed.

There was a staistically significant difference in bone mineral density (BMD) between cases and controls.

Also, there were significant differences in BMD between cases with different grades of physical activity.

There was a significant difference between cases and controls in body mass index (BM1) with positive correlation to BMD There was a non significant difference in BMD between cases with adequate and inadequate calcium intake.

Regarding the sex hormones, non of them correlated with bone mineral density.

This may indicate that other factors or hormones may have a more prominant effect.
