Relationship between spasticity and motor dysfunction in hemiplegic patients

This study was performed on 50 stroke patients (38 males and 12 females).

They were classified according to the Oxford shire community stroke project classification into 4 subgroups: 16 had partial anterior circulation infarcts (PACI), 22 had lacunar infarcts (LACI), 3 had posterior circulation infarcts (POCI) and 9 were total anterior circulation infarcts (TACI).

We studied the functional outcome and mobility of these patients by using modified Barthel index (MBI) and mobility milestones.

As regards the MBI, we found a very highly significant difference between all types of stroke at admission and after 30 days’ interval.

Again there was a very highly significant difference between the groups of stroke patients in achieving mobility milestones.

In conclusion, we found that the functional outcome (by MBI) and mobility outcome (by M.M.) of stroke patients provide a framework within which quantifiable recovery can be seen to take place.
