Knee osteoarthrosis in concrete reinforcement and mat manufacture workers

In studing of possible effects of occupational stress on the knees, 160 activrly working concrete reinforcement workers, 53 mat manufacture workers and 161 matched control group were subjected to full history taking and anthropometric measurements.

Only subjects with knee complaint were subjected to local and radiological examination of the knees.

Prevalence of knee osteoarthrosis was higher among mat manufacture workers (41.5%) Minor clinical differences were detected among concrete reinforcement and mat workers.

Radiologic changes of medial tibiofemoral compartment more frequently involved in concrete reinforcement workers while radiologic changes of patello-femoral joint more frequently involved in mat workers.

In multi-variate analysis, the determinants of knee osteoarthrosis were occupation, smoking obesity and age.

This study indicate that prolonged knee bending and mechanical loading increase the risk of knee osteoarthrosis.
