الملخص EN

The aim of this study was to have an overview of the frequency and pattern of antibiotic prescribing in A! Hussein Hospital, King Hussein Medical Center (///// KHMC) in order to reach an optimum use of antibiotics compared to worldwide figures.

The population of the study was the 312 patients (67% bed occupancy) at HH/KHMC on September 30, 1997 (a normal representative day of the year).

One hundred and fifty three patients were receiving antibiotics (49%), which is higher than the worldwide range (20-40%)" 2 but is similar to the 50.3% in a study at HH/KHMC in 1993 (Margi el al)"1.

Pediatricians were the highest preseribers, cephalosporines were the most common antibiotics used, and the presumable therapeutic use was more than the presumable prophylactic use (61.4% vs 38.6%).
