الملخص EN

In a retrospective study we have analysed our experience in diagnosing and treating hepatic abscesses over a period of seven years, placing emphasis on the clinical presentation, causative organisms, and aetiology.

The predominant symptoms on presentation are fever, abdominal pain and malaise and the possibility of liver abscessation must form an early part of the differential diagnosis.

Hepatobiliary diseases appear to be the main aetiological factor.

We isolated mixed pathogens with a predominance of Pseudomonas species.

Percutaneous drainage produced complete resolution in more than ninety per cent of cases that were uncomplicated by further underlying causes and we consider this to be the most desirable approach to treatment.
