Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland in a 712 year old female child

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) of the parotid gland is a rare tumor in patients under the age of 10 years but it is the most common malignant tumor of the salivary glands in childhood and adolescence.

We report a case in a 71/2 year old female who had multiple abnormalities.

She was a known case of congenital adrenal hyperplasia, B-thalassemia trait and sickle cell trait who presented with a mass 1.7 x 2.7 cm related to the right parotid region, fixed to the parotid glands and growing slowly over three months.

Superficial parotidectomy was done but the margins were not free.

Later a near complete parotidectomy with partial preservation of the facial nerve was followed by radiotherapy.

Although many other cases of MEC have been recorded in this age group, our case differs in that the patient had many other abnormalities, raising the possibility of chromosomal influences.
