Gait biomechanics in osteoarthritis of the knee joint

Objective: To determine the effect of osteoarthritis (OA) on the adduction moment of the knee and then correlate these findings with the variability of time.

Methods: Knee adduction moment was measured in patients with unilateral symptomatic OA (varus gonarthrosis) and compared both with the adduction moment in the contralateral asymptomatic knee as well as with the adduction moment in the knees of normal controls.

Tests were repeated at varying times to define the variability of time with dynamic gait variable.

Results: There was a tendency to an increase in the adduction moment of the affected knee over the three test periods.

The magnitude of this moment was not significantly different from the normal or unaffected side (p<0.05).

The flexion moment of the knee showed a tendency to decrease over the three test periods.

However, no statistical difference was found between the affected knee and either the normal or unaffected knee.
