الملخص EN

Despite tlie use of intracoronary stents, appro*[/»(//?[}' 15-20% of patients who undergo percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) experience symptomatic restenosis.

The /■(Stenosis is even higher af-ter /ااءار//»ء; angioplasty without stenting and has been shown to he /'// the range of40-50%.

Experimental obser-xations suggest that HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors ("statins") reduce the risk of restenosis.

The activity’ of statins limits the rate of synthesis, no( only of cholesterol, but also of a range of other molecules involved in cellular /اااء'را'،اااا.

Their benefits in primary and secondary pre-vention OJ atherosclerosis have been widely recognised.

Clinical trials using different types of statins were designed to evaluate their ability to influence the incidence ٠/ restenosis after successful conventional PTCA.

The ٢،?-suits clearly demonstrated that although statins reduce lipid levels they do not prevent restenosis.

The underlyingpatho-logical reasons for this shortcoming are discussed in this review.
