الملخص الإنجليزي

Facilities planning is an important concept to industrial organizations as well as service organizations.

It is the area in human knowledge, where many fields of science intersect and overlap, especially Engineering and Management.

Two models have been developed within the scope of this research project.

The first model is called the Facilities Planning – Operations Performance model, or in short the FPOP model.

This conceptual framework includes, new variables which were introduced by the researcher.

These new variables were: Supportiveness of facilities secondary systems and Goodness of the Layout-Material Handling System pair.

New concepts were introduced within the context of the FPOP model, such as the idea of visualizing the Layout-Material Handling System pair as a two layer system with interaction zone.

All proposed relationships of the FPOP model were validated by the extensive literature review, carried out by the researcher.

Three propositions were stated by the researcher, describing major relationships.

A methodology was selected, to test the various relationships of the FPOP model, and to prove its four propositions.

A questionnaire was designed, validated and administered to operations managers of a sample of exporting industrial organizations in Jordan.

This sample was constituted according to systematic sampling.

100 questionnaires were administered, 93 ones were collected back and 88 were accepted by the researcher.

All Three propositions of the FPOP model were proven using statistical techniques.

Relationships between the independent variables which are the above listed components of facilities planning and the dependent variable (operations performance) were tested to be statistically significant.

Moreover, statistical tests proved the moderating effect of the operations strategy on the above relationships.

The second model which is a mathematical model and is called the Closeness-Preference - Cost model or in short the CPC model.

It was named after the three objective functions that constitute its mathematical formulation.

The CPC model is a tri-objective function optimization model, which seeks to solve what is known as the facilities relayout problem (FRLP).

Two heuristic solutions were developed to solve the CPC model objective function, namely “The simultaneous iterative technique” and “The sequential iterative technique”.

The CPC model was justified by presenting its distinguishing features from other FRLP models.

Finally, conclusions and recommendations were summarized and presented
