الملخص الإنجليزي

This thesis is concerned with the re-preparation of C-4-chloropheny-calix[4]resorcinarene, C-4-bromophenylcalix[4]resorcinarene and C-4-methoxyphenylcalix[4]resorcinarene through the acid-catalyzed condensation of resorcinol with the following 4-substitutedbenzaldehydes: 4-chloro-benzaldehyde, 4-bromobenzaldehyde, and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde.

The synthesized compounds were studied as adsorbents for selected heavy metal ions namely Cu(II), Co(II), Zn(II), Mn(II) and Pb(II).

Different adsorption experiments were conducted to determine the optimum adsorption conditions such as pH and contact time.

In addition, the experiments were conducted to examine different kinetic models against our adsorption data.

Finally, the selectivity of the adsorbents (3a-c) towards a mixture of heavy metal ions adsorbates were studied and discussed.

The optimum pH was found to be 5.6 at contact time of 30 min and an initial concentration of 1 ppm for all selected heavy metal ions using C-4-substitutedphenylcalix[4]resorcinarenes (3a-c) as adsorbents.

Different kinetic models have been applied on the adsorption experimental data such as; Santosa first order, Lagergren pseudo first order and Ho pseudo second order.

Results showed that all adsorption processes were followed and adopted pseudo second order kinetic model.

Equilibrium % removal using compound (3a) was found to be around 84.29%, 79.55%, 78.54%, 77.92%, 75.19% for heavy metal ions; Pb(II), Cu (II), Mn(II), Zn(II) and Co(II), respectively.

Using compound (3b) as adsorbent, the equilibrium % removal was found to be 87.86%, 87.73%, 85.52 %, 82.44 %, 76.35% for heavy metal ions; Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Mn(II) and Co(II), respectively.

Equilibrium removal percentage was found to be 95%, 89.76%, 89.58%, 86.43%, 80.96% for heavy metal ions; Cu(II), Mn(II) Zn(II), Pb(II) and Co(II), respectively when compound (3c) was used as adsorbent.

When a mixture of Cu(II), Co(II), Zn(II), Mn(II) and Pb(II) ions with initial concentration of 1 ppm was used at shaking time of 10 min, removal percentage was ranked in the order Pb(II) > Cu(II) > Zn(II) > Mn(II) > Co(II) when compound (3a) was the adsorbent; Cu(II) > Co(II) > Mn(II) > Pb(II) > Zn(II) when compound (3b) was the adsorbent and Cu(II) > Zn(II) > Co(II) > Mn(II) > Pb(II) when compound (3c) was the adsorbent
