الملخص الإنجليزي

This study aimed to investigate the effect of a proposed instructional program based on Grice's maxims on writing coherence among Saudi university English majors and their attitudes towards learning English.

The study addressed the following questions: 1.

What are the components of the proposed instructional program based on Grice's maxims? 2.

What is the effect of the proposed instructional program based on Grice's maxims on the writing coherence of the Saudi university English majors? 3.

What is the effect of the proposed instructional program based on Grice's maxims on the attitudes of the Saudi university English majors towards learning English? The instruments used in this study included a writing performance test and a students' questionnaire with a five- type Likert scale to measure the students' attitudes towards learning English.

The writing performance test, the attitudes questionnaire, and the instructional program were prepared by the researcher and their validity and reliability were established.

The subjects of the study included 60 Saudi English majors from the Department of English at the Faculty of Education at Aljouf University in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

They were enrolled in the university during the first semester of the academic year 2009/2010.

The subjects were purposively chosen and distributed into two equivalent groups.

An instructor at the university holding the MA degree in English taught the two groups.

The data obtained from the study were processed through statistical analysis (means and standard deviation).

Multiple Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) was used to find out the difference in mean scores between the two groups on the writing coherence and the Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to find out the difference in mean scores between the two groups on the students' attitudes towards learning English as a foreign language.

The findings of the study revealed that the instructional program was efficient in improving coherence in students' writing as there was statistically significant difference between the experimental and the control groups in favor of the experimental group.

The findings of the study also revealed that there was a statistically significant difference in the attitudes of Saudi university English majors towards learning English in favor of the experimental group.

Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations and suggestions were proposed: 1.

Teachers are advised to use Gricean maxims in teaching writing because they provide a concrete background for achieving coherence in writing, and textbook authors are also advised to incorporate Grice's maxims in the writing activities they suggest as leading strategies to teach writing at higher levels.

The researcher also suggested conducting further empirical research to examine more evidence concerning the effectiveness of Grice's maxims in teaching writing in general
