In the mid-nineteenth century, migration to the United States was increasing.

American expansionism towards Asia was supposed to bring civilization to the "yellow race".

In the beginning, the Chinese were welcomed in California, but the political climate changed soon.

The Chinese were no longer welcomed in California.

They suffered long from the prejudices.

This research deals withSui Sin Far'sbiography, whose writing is highly influenced by her personal experience, the social and historical background of Chinese immigrants in the United States of America followed by thedefinition of the concept of otherness which will be applied to Sui Sin Far's stories, the Americanizing of Pau Tsu, The Inferior Woman and Mrs.
