The speech act of urging in two Shakespearean comedies with reference to its realization in Kurdish

People's daily dialogues are full of verbs referring to speech acts.

But most of these verbs have not yet been pragmatically analysed.

The speech act verb 'to urge' is one of these verbs; it is frequently found in people's daily conversations.

The present paper conducts a speech act analysis of this performative verb in two Shakespearean comedies: A Mid-Summer Night's Dream and As You Like It, in the light of pragmatics in general and speech act theory in particular, and with reference to its manifestation in the Kurdish translated version.

The research consists of six main sections: section one is introductory; it sheds light on the concept of speech acts and its vital role in literary text analysis; section two, sheds light on the speech act theory of literature in general; section three, dwells on the concept of 'urge' as a speech act verb; section four, deals with the structure of the speech act of urging with reference to the general components of speech act verbs set by Searle in his standard model (1969).

Section five, represents the practical part of the study.

It exhibits the analysis of the speech act of urging, and meanwhile shows its realization in the Kurdish translated version of the texts under study.

This realization highlights aspects of similarities and differences between the source and the target languages.

Section six, eventually, is assigned for the findings of the paper along with their discussion.

It is followed by a list of the works cited.

This paper is not to be regarded as merely an attempt to apply Speech Act Theory to certain dramatic texts; it is, in fact, an exploration in the process of analysis; an endeavour to extend the theory and give it more credibility by discussing it in concrete terms.

Hence, the study can be said to be advantageous to scholars, researchers and students in the fields of pragmatics, semantics, literary pragmatics, stylistics and literature.
