الملخص الإنجليزي

The thesis seeks to examine the justifications of the ritual of salat in the works of the two prominent Sufis al-Hakim al-Tirmidh؟ and Abu Hamid al-Ghazàl؟.

Through a comparative textual analysis, the thesis aims at shedding light on the rational orientation of Sufism regarding worship and its various implications within the Sufi teachings particularly, and Islamic thoughts in general.

Thus, through following the contributions of Annimare Schimmel (1952 & 1975), Constance E.

Padwick (1996), and Marion Holmes Katz (2013), the current study aims at expanding the theoretical analysis of the Sufi justifications of the worship of salat by comparing this theory of mystical justifications in the works of al-Tirmidh؟ and al-Ghazali.

Among the contributions is to investigate the aspect of the rational tendencies of the early Sufi legacy, to highlight the importance of reasoning in Islamic rituals and therefore the status of the intellect as opposed to text in Islamic jurisprudence, to assess the significance of the mystical meanings in Islamic practices, and to explore the relationship between Islamic jurisprudence and Sufism through outlining the significance of mystical rationales of salat.

The thesis argues that al-Tirmidh؟ and al-Ghazàl؟’s justifications aim at criticizing the jurist’s understanding of Islamic jurisprudence by introducing what might be called the jurisprudence of Sufism (fiqh al-tasuuwf) which emphasizes the spiritual and the inner dimension of Islamic law and demonstrates overlaps between spirituality and jurisprudence.

Key Terms: Theory of Ustification; Mystical Ustifications; Islamic Law; Sufism; Renunciation; Asceticism; Legal Theory; Esoteric Knowledge; The Science of Unveiling; Theosophy; Theological Analogy.
