n the past few decades, identity discourses in Morocco have changed substantially.

Amazigh heritage in particular has moved from being a marginal component of Moroccan society to an element of its national identity.

In the aftermath of independence, the Moroccan regime pursued a homogenizing nationalist project based on Arabism and Islam at the expense of Amazigh culture.

In the past two decades however, Moroccan officials have started to acknowledge Amazigh heritage as part of the country’s identity.

Through looking at historical and discursive data, this study aims to demonstrate how the emergence of an embryonic Amazigh nationalism catalyzed many of the changes witnessed in the country.

It argues that the mutation of Amazigh demands from sporadic claims for ethno-linguistic recognition into a wider political agenda prompted Morocco to co-opt the movement through incorporating Amazigh heritage into its national identity discourse.
