الملخص الإنجليزي

This project deals with a major issue of English Language Teaching (ELT), namely syllabus design for students of economics at the Moroccan secondary school level.

The choice of students of economics has been influenced by a host of factors, among which the continuous development of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in the world of education, the expanding progress of the world economy, the opening of A1 Akhawayn University in Ifrane and the subsequent coming of the GATT are the mostly considered incentives. Relying on two questionnaires and a set of structured interviews, the research seeks to investigate the extent to which the textbook used currently to teach English to students of economics (Bridges) is responsive to their needs at the third level of the Baccalaureate. The introduction sets the problem and rationale of the present study within its theoretical scope.

It addresses the problem of ELT in Morocco, describes the literature related to syllabus design in English curricula and in particular it focuses on the construct of Needs Analysis. The first part of the study proper is devoted to the procedure and the methodology used in the research.

It describes two questionnaires, one administered to students of economics and another to their teachers of English.

Both questionnaires were about the students’ and the teachers’ perceptions of several aspects of the textbook.

This first part describes also the structured interviews conducted among some educational authorities. The second part, ‘Findings and Data Analysis’, is divided into two sections.

The first section is descriptive and consists of the presentation of the data gathered and the percentages.

It also includes reports of the structured interviews.

The second section is interpretative; it is comprised of comments on the findings. In the last section, recommendations for English language teaching in Moroccan secondary school are offered on the basis of the findings of the study.

It is hoped that these recommendations will improve the process of syllabus design in Morocco and make the language learning of Moroccan secondary school students of economics an enjoyable task that will make them their own agents in both their academic and professional careers.
