الملخص الإنجليزي

n terms of international relations theory, most analysts classify the Islamic Republic of Iran‟s foreign policy as Radical.

This is far from accurate.

In reality, Iran‟s foreign policy since 1979 has tended towards Realism.

This thesis arrives at that conclusion by using a Constructivist bottom-up analysis of Iran‟s identity-based interests.

It applies its conclusions about Iran‟s interests to major foreign policy events within each of Iran‟s first three decades, and then across the entire span of contemporary Iran‟s history.

This allows the analyst to evaluate each foreign policy event individually with respect to different established criteria within the three primary international relations theories: Radicalism; Liberalism; Realism.

Once the analyst classified each event, patterns and trends developed.

Placing those patterns and trends within the context of changes in the levels of analysis across time further substantiates or detracts from describing Iran‟s foreign policy as one international relations school over another.

The main results of the study are three-fold.

First, it challenges conventional wisdom and places a new perspective on Iran‟s foreign policy.

Second, it provides an example and demonstrates how a Constructivist method can assist in providing a more informative analysis of any state‟s foreign policy.

Third, it reinforces Realism as a sound international relations theory while simultaneously providing more general support for the international system‟s state-based structure.

These results hold a number of implications for international relations theorists and practitioners alike.
