A great international debate over the future of the United Nations in the light of the persisting financial crisis is taking place.

A category of observers and policy makers, especially within the developed states (the major contributors to the UN budget), declare their dissatisfaction with the financial system (assessment of the quotas, management, audit....etc), and advocate the abolition of the organization.

On the other hand, wide portions of the observers of international relations defend the necessity of maintaining the United Nations for the role it plays in peacekeeping and in promoting the living conditions for the people worldwide and for the forum of multilateralism it represents.

There is another vision, yet very restraint, that denies the need for any reform.

In this thesis I will argue, through an analysis of the current situation of international relations to assess the debate, that the UN has still long days ahead to live and that the trend of the development of the international events is more likely to impose the United Nations as an important actor in the international scene.

However, most of the criticisms to the United Nations financial system have good bases.

Therefore, there is urgent need to give them an ear and to mend the imperfection in order to endow the UN with the mechanisms to respond to the challenges of the new millennium as they were declared by the Secretary General Kofi Annan.

Therefore, the debate over the UN financial system is a very positive and beneficial for the promotion of the UN.
